Electrical distributor Mayer Electric’s ecommerce operation struggled to easily scale its product catalog, create customized content for brands, offer not just individual products but holistic solutions. Only one percent of its customers was using the website, so it needed to increase adoption.

The Challenge
Mayer is one of the nation’s largest wholesale distributors of electrical products and equipment, connected solutions, lighting, digital tools, DataCom technologies, power distribution, and automation and control systems. They serve contractors, industrials, OEMs, integrators, institutions, government entities, utility providers, commercial businesses, and residential customers. The company had a number of challenges with its ecommerce operation:
- Product Catalog Scale: It needed the ability to scale its product catalog to begin including partner brands and suppliers' products.
- Content Management: Content management was difficult on the current hosting platform and did not allow content and landing page customization per brand or supplier.
- Products vs. Solutions: Mayer wanted to sell solutions to their customers, not just singular products. The company needed to improve the searchability of the website to make it easier for customers to find the products they wanted.
- Low Adoption: Only one percent of current customers were using the website to self-service and shop.
The Xngage Solution
- Ecommerce Implementation: Xngage helped Mayer Electric implement the Optimizely Configured Commerce ecommerce platform. We increased Mayer's product catalog from 65,000 products to more than 200,000 thanks to Optimizely’s ability to integrate product data from affiliate brands and suppliers, allowing customers to purchase these products directly on the Mayer website. Optimizely’s CMS allowed Mayer to customize landing pages, product catalogs, and content for each supplier. We also designed and implemented the Schneider Configurator tool which allows the customer to answer a series of questions to lead them to the best solution for them based on their needs.
The Results
As a result of the richer product catalog, solutions-focused configurator tool, and customized content, a much higher percentage of customers adopted the new ecommerce website.

Mayer was able to offer its customers an extensive product catalog including their own as well as affiliate suppliers' items – all of which can be purchased on Mayer's ecommerce website. This allowed Mayer to sell a higher volume of products and, combined with the Schneider Configurator tool, allowed Mayer to craft more end-to-end solutions for their customers.
